CITY MYTHS ''True or false?''
We hear all kinds of facts about Berlin. Which ones are true? You tell us. If you know the answer to any of these, please let us know at
hello@zgberlin.com.
1) Berlin has more bridges than Venice or Amsterdam together.
2) Berlin is the largest major city built completely on sand.
3) Berlin has no geographical reason to be a major city _ no harbor, no bay, no mines, no valley, no big river or thick forests and poor soil.
4) Berlin is on all the magical maps that list the earth's 1,528 geomantic spots such as stonehenge, the pyramids or the Aztec temple Teotihuacan. But it is one of the city's best kept secrets and this place reportedly is the only one worldwide that was ever sealed--in 1933.
5) Berlin is the third youngest major city in the developed world--behind Los Angeles and Miami--to rise to prominence, emerging in the second half of the 20th century under the Prussians.
6) Between 1990 and 2000, one million people moved in and out of the city _ roughly a quarter of the population.
7) Prenzlauerberg has the highest birth rate in Germany. Another Berlin district, Neukoelln, has the most residents on social welfare.
8) Berlin has the highest percentage of smokers in Germany.
9) Berlin has around 400 galleries at the moment and counting.
10) Underneath the city, Berlin has the largest number of tunnels and underground constructions in the world.
